Something new
Another morning, another early start. This time I decided to head a little further north in search of a sunrise, partially because I thought there was a cool composition on offer, and partially because I wanted to get along to see the “Human Excellence Project”.
Behind the scenes of a morning shoot
The photography part started about 4:15am, with me picking my way across rocks and through the splash zone to find a lovely little cove. I found my composition, setup the camera, and waited. Over the next hour or so I played with camera settings, experimented with some panoramas, and even tested the weather sealing of the body thanks to one particularly large wave. In the end I was forced to accept that I just wasn’t going to get the lovely pink and red hues I’d hoped for, and packed up.

Heading down to the meeting point, I had very little idea what the “Human Excellence Project” was all about. I’d seen the morning selfie and assumed it was some kind of wellness / community morning swim group, but their website suggested there was more to it than that.
Ebb and flow
I met Paul, Colin, Tracey, Sarah, and many many others, quickly realising that the group was very friendly and welcoming to new people joining in. My natural introversion was quickly overcome by the warm introductions and almost compulsory hug greeting.
Sunrise Panorama
As the newbie I was the designated ‘selfie’ taker, a shot I normally avoid. With that out the way it was time to swim, the ocean beautiful and flat with only the occasional stinger (jellyfish) to interrupt the conversation.
Purple Hues
All in all it was an excellent start to the day. Big thank you to Paul and the Human Excellence Project crew for making me feel very welcome, you’ve got a great group and a wonderful dynamic.
